Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome
The wrist, made up
of the carpal bones, forms a tunnel-like structure - the carpal
tunnel - through which pass nine tendons and one median nerve.
Symptoms include pain,
tingling, numbness and weakness of the fingers, hands and wrist
so intense that they awaken the sufferer at night. One out o
f
ten people suffers from CTS. It usually affects domestic workers,
secretaries, meat cutters, assembly line workers, carpenters,
musicians and others who do repetitive tasks with their hands.
Traditional mediacl
treatment for CTS ncludes the application of splints, ice, drugs,
cortisone injections, and even surgery. Medicine's poor success
in treating this painful condition led Robert Mendelsohn, M.D.
to conclude: "Since the medical treatment for this condition
is so often unsatisfactory, I have for years been recommending
that my patients consult muscle and joint therapy specialists."
The Chiropractic
Approach To CTS
The chiropractic approach
of releasing spinal nerve stress has been of great benefit to
Carpal Tunnel Sundrome sufferers, since "faulty innervation
caused by spinal joint lesions is one of the main factors in the
poduction of wrist swelling, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome..."
Anyone with CTS should
have a chiropractic check-up for nerve stress before resorting
to drugs and surgery.
